Monday I woke up in the middle of the night with a bit of a headache and then couldn’t go back to sleep. This isn’t like me at all. As I lay there, I thought about my Keeping It Real TV show that I would be doing at noon and wondered if this had something to do with the headache.
Then my dear friend and colleague Jean Hendrickson came to mind. Jean was a spiritual teacher, healer, and channeler who passed away a few weeks ago. For the past 10 years, she lived in a nursing home. I remember when she moved there, she couldn’t believe how unhappy some people were.
She told me, “How can they be unhappy? We have people to take care of us if we get sick; we don’t have to cook; they take us places. Sure, I don’t always feel very good and I have trouble with my heart, but I am very happy living here.” She then proceeded to write a book about how to be happy living in a nursing home and shared it with the rest of the residents, staff, and family. That was Jean!
One of the things she used to say a lot and shared though someone after she died is what I want to share with you. It’s this. Jean said, “Every day do at least one thing that makes you feel blissful.” Bliss is that deep sense of satisfaction of our soul-selves. We attain it through meditation, yoga, drawing, coloring, making music, running; people reach it in different ways.
With all the unrest going on today, if we can remember to do at least one thing that makes us feel blissful every day – and preferably more – this solid sense of peace and love will be the bedrock upon which we live our lives. We won’t be bothered as much by what goes on around us since we will experience it as the wind blowing past. Once I decided to share this with my audience, the headache went away and I fell back asleep!
Try it. Every day do at least one thing that makes you feel blissful! What a difference this makes in the quality of our lives. Thank you, Jean!
